I made it just like the recipe and it was SO good! My husband loved it and that says a lot because I telephone call him the Food Diva. My brother-in-constabulary enjoyed it besides. Everyone was blimp and I would definitely make information technology again! The pepper gives it a dainty kick too.

Not a new recipe to me - but one that I hadn't made in a long time. One tip - if you let this sit down and don't serve immediately, exist prepared to add more than milk. I as well upped the flavor a scrap by using finely diced ruby onion browned with the beefiness and added a minor amount of worcestershire sauce plus fresh chopped parsley. Served over toast with sliced fresh tomatoes, this made a very satisfying meal.

I created this for supper 1 night when I didn't have anything else to melt but had all the ingredients on mitt. Zilch fancy but really good - the whole family unit liked information technology! I added some crimson pepper flakes in it just for some added taste. Served information technology over biscuits, all of it was gone in a affair of minutes. Will brand again :)

I am an Army deviling and I take fond memories of my dad making SOS for me in the mornings earlier schoolhouse when he was habitation. I used this recipe today and information technology was wonderful. Cheers so much for taking the fourth dimension to put your recipe on here. I didn't drain the beefiness, merely I did use extra lean hamburger meat so that in that location wasn't quite so much grease in the skillet. :) YUM! (And I call up it is Best over toast...the toastiness is overnice with the gravy!)

I ate SOS almost every day for breakfast in the regular army for over 20 years, if it was avail. I just love the stuff. note that craven bouilon is not office of the armys version of creamed beefiness, and this one is also missing worcestershire sauce.
12/02/2011
Very hearty, stick-to-your ribs comfort nutrient. Made information technology exactly every bit written (used 73/27 ground beefiness) and it was very tasty. May increase seasoning a bit adjacent time. I was worried information technology would be really peppery, but I really couldn't really gustation the pepper. The spices were all nicely counterbalanced, and non ane flavor overpowered some other, and so if I do increase the seasoning, I'd keep them at the same ratio to each other. :::EDIT::: I made this once again with slightly leaner beefiness (80/20) and the sauce was Mode likewise thick this time around without that extra fatty to soak up the flour. It all the same tasted great (I did double the seasoning this time), simply I think in the future when using 80/twenty ground chuck I'll reduce the flour to 1/iii cup.
06/11/2011
This was fantabulous. My married man loved it. Still I did make a couple of additions to match our tastes. I added a slice of diced cherry-red onion to the cooking meat mixture, and a couple of dashes of worcestershire sauce when I added milk. I also used buttermilk instead of regular milk. I did have to use ii cups of milk instead of only i i/2 cups, just that was expected from other reviews. Overall I will be making this once again, and again.
12/20/2009
I used ground sausage and added a cup more of milk, and my whole family loved it and asked to accept it again. Next fourth dimension we might take it on biscuits.
03/13/2010
Squeamish season, this actually had some season unlike some SOS recipes. I had to add another one-half loving cup of milk though every bit this was besides thick. This makes a fast and easy dinner. We are going out of town and needed to use upwards the milk and breadstuff and this did both. Cheers.
10/03/2012
I condiser myself a connoiseur of creamed beef, chipped beef, etc. The just recommendation I would add is a play tricks to non overdoing the flour amount is to add a one-half cup of milk one time the burger has browned, bring it to a depression boil and and then add the flour, whisking in i tablespoon at a time. This allows yous to get the consistency right instead of back pedaling. Add more than milk and flour as desired simply ut the milk in first. Otherwise information technology tin can and more often than not volition get lumpy. Savor! Ah!, the smell of diesel in the morning!
02/21/2011
Fantabulous!!! And so very tasty!! Although I was leery of using chicken bouillon, I am so glad I did, and followed the recipe exactly as written. This is, past far, the All-time recipe for SOS!!! Wish my dad, who was a WWII Air Corp veteran, was still with u.s. to sense of taste information technology. (He used to mix the flour in before browning, and, although delicious, his was a little too greasy for my liking.) This version allowed me to drain what petty grease there was (I used ground circular), and it still came out awesome!!! My hubby insisted on seconds!!!! Thanks And so much for sharing!!
03/x/2010
I used to make this all the time, only w/o the chicken bullion. I fixed it exactly similar the recipe & it's perfect.
07/09/2014
I just made this recipe for my ailing 94 year old father and he ate it. He always talked about eating this in WWII and my mom used to make it often. He has not had it in years and I take been trying to cook things to entice him to eat. This recipe did information technology and I served it over real mashed potatoes. The fob is definitely the grease. I used a little more milk and a trivial more pepper. Turned out bully!
04/04/2011
I grew upward eating this...my female parent was the worst cook, but this was so like shooting fish in a barrel to make that even she got it right. Im making information technology for the family tonight.
04/11/2011
This was simply okay. The flavour actually wasn't there and it was so thick that it just sat and then heavy on my stomach. Also the pepper somehow over powered information technology.
08/xvi/2013
My dad was an Army man, but my mom never made this at domicile. When I plant the recipe, I had to endeavor it. After my family decided they liked it, I called my dad to tell him I made "Army special" for dinner. He knew it was SOS right away! I am bringing him some tomorrow. BE SURE NOT TO ADD EXTRA Table salt when making this. I used a spice blend that I use routinely, and forgot about the common salt in that and the chicken bullion. I added more milk and cooked information technology a little longer to effort to thin the saltiness, just it is still salty. We served information technology with biscuits, and my 15 year old football game actor ate 4 biscuits opened up with SOS on each side. Guess the extra salt is but replenishing his loss from workouts. ;) Adjacent time we will attempt it with a hamburger and breakfast sausage mixture and serve it over hash dark-brown patties as suggested by another reviewer. Cheers for sharing!
06/02/2014
Succulent! I used 2 cups of milk to get the creamy texture. 2d fourth dimension I made information technology, I added a cup and a half cooked cubed Yukon potatoes, worchestire sauce and a can of peas and diced carrots. Made a thick beefy stew. One fourth dimension I added an envelope of dry onion soup mix. That added an awesome flavour. Either way, information technology'due south a hit at my house and so versatile.
01/05/2010
Very yummy! Although the SOS I'm familiar with is more flossy then how this recipe turns out. I followed the recipe as stated but too added some garlic common salt. Hubby also thought it would be good with mushrooms, simply I liked it how it is. Will make again. Quick and like shooting fish in a barrel and my family loved information technology!
03/05/2011
VERY GOOD! Mine turned out to be very thick though. About likely my fault because I did utilise more than than ane pd. beef. My husband loved information technology! will brand once more .
04/12/2010
This is a favorite dish from my childhood and a become to recipe subsequently Easter to use up hardboiled eggs, which we chop upwardly and serve with the dish. I followed the seasonings listed in this recipe for the meat mixture, only followed my own recipe for the sauce. It was a happy mix and very succulent. Even my 2 pickiest children liked it!! =D
01/25/2010
sorry couldn't get the 1/2 star in.......this was delish, loved it, very easy to brand.....mine did plow out very thick I actually added a bit more milk and poured it over whole wheat pasta........
x/30/2013
Never did I think my boyfriend was gonna become for this dish...only i remembered my dad making it for us, well...young man liked it and and then did I! It was like shooting fish in a barrel, filling and very tasty.. Nosotros served it over toast, and now this is my go to meal for those nights when y'all just don't want to make something overly complicated!Thank you for posting, brought me dorsum memories of my dad....
04/25/2010
4 1/ii this was pretty great, I chose it equally it seemed to have the nigh flavor of all the SOS recipes. I followed the ingredients and was very pleased, the flavors were yummers. I served it over toast, which was good. Next time, i will make information technology then there is more gravy and try it over noodles. I thought virtually changing the craven bouillon for beefiness, just decided to try it equally meant to be, and glad I did. Give thanks you for this.
02/21/2013
I made this tonight. I did it exactly like the recipe said except I did apply two cups of milk, which I thought made just the correct consistency. It was absolutely succulent! Who would think something so simple could gustatory modality so good. The alloy of seasonings is perfect~ Tin't wait to go far again!!
11/fifteen/2013
Made this today and there is a tiny chip leftover, but not much! I omitted garlic and bouillon because that's how my mom always fabricated it, and added a 1/two cup more milk. Terrific over split-open up biscuits!! YUM!!
03/27/2014
This came out great. I didn't really mensurate the ingredients, I adjusted on the fly for more servings. Cheers for the recipe
09/16/2013
Later reading the reviews I fabricated some changes. I added fresh mushrooms and one onion. I fried them with the hamburger. I did not utilise the onion powder. And I added one package of brown gravy which made information technology creamier. I used seasonings to taste. My wife loves this dish.
09/08/2014
Excellent! Great flavor!
05/10/2010
I have not really used this recipe, but with the exception of the onion powder the ingredients are exactly the same as my version, but I cooke mine differently. I'm an ground forces deviling and have been eating this dish for 40 years. My kids eat information technology and always inquire for information technology. We usually eat information technology for breakfast but sometimes have it for dinner. Having made it for years I don't measure simply I cook the ground beef adding common salt and garlic pulverization or adobo seasoning, then bleed it. I remove the beef from the pan and make a roux with flour and butter, stir in mik plus water or chicken goop. I add chicken boullion paste to the sauce, seasoning to taste, and then add together the beef back to the sauce. Actually practiced over buttered toast.
ten/05/2010
i but gave it 3 stars because i had to modify the recipe and i know the original way would have been better. i did not have milk so i used my redundancy box of powdered milk. the gravy wasnt every bit expert as i recall it could have been. i addded onion and garlic to the beefiness. i too added some worcestershire sauce. at that place was still a picayune flavor lacking, so at the terminate, right before serving, i stirred in a few slices of foam cheese! information technology really helped with the flavor and texture of the gravy. i volition definitely make this over again, but i will make sure i have milk the next time!
07/17/2011
my dad was in the Ground forces 42 years ago and loved the SOS. He loved this recipe.
01/fourteen/2010
This was a very tasty, comforting dish! Like already mentioned by another, this is no cuisuine although it is a delic Dish! The simply thing I changed when cooking this recipe was add the 2 things I Ever am cooking with! I cooked the beef with minced galic, along with the powders and at the end while it smmered I added nearly two tabs of butter to give a little more than oomph of season. My beau made a mmmm mmmm mmmm but I don't recollect he enjoyed it as much every bit I did. The all-time part was it was a snap to put together and cook! But that'south probably why this recipe is no cuisine!
02/04/2013
This recipe is right on!!!!! It is succulent and fifty-fifty the kids liked it!! Super easy to make too
01/27/2011
very good and stix to ya ribs
12/19/2014

11/02/2014
I've never heard of SOS. I loved it. Two of my three super picky kids loved it! Thanks!
02/11/2018
I fabricated this tonight, as written. I did add diced fresh onion, instead of onion powder. Delicious !!! My 9 year old gave it 25,000 stars ! He is my toughest critic. Served over biscuits. You lot will notice that you lot'll need to add together more milk, not a big bargain. As former military myself I must say 4.0 sir.
x/11/2010
I don't know if i did it wrong, simply it didn't plow out well at all, which is a shame.
05/04/2010
Uncomplicated and tasty! My toddler took 1 bite..inspected it with great interest, and so ate her entire portion saying "mmmm". This is a keeper for a quick and piece of cake meal. Thanks!!!
02/24/2012
I accept made this so many times before. The lady that told me how to make this chosen it hamburger gravy. I guess there was more milk added to make information technology creamier. But I have put it over rice, noodles, toast, biscuits etc. you get the point it is very versatile. I take even used ground sausage and made information technology for breakfast over biscuits. Very expert. Love this recipe it is the best manner to brand a white gravy when you are using sausage or hamburger.
01/11/2011
I only made SOS with 1 lb. basis venison, two 1/2 cups milk, 1 cup flour, pepper, and herbed salt (A. Vogel Herbamare). It's succulent! Blightie
02/11/2018
I made this today lol it's great! I utilize to make this all the fourth dimension as a melt in the NAVY!!!!!
eleven/xxx/2017
Succulent, and needs no changes or improvements!
08/06/2015
Glue similar texture.
x/08/2010
Yummy! I have made it twice and needed to double the corporeality of milk in the recipe. The first time I made it, I served it over white rice. The 2nd time, I made information technology with breakfast sausage and served it over biscuits.
03/14/2012
I added fresh mushrooms and some red pepper flakes. I had to use more milk cause it tasted to much like flour without the extra. Was good, but not certain I would brand information technology again. Just not something I would want to eat on a regular footing.
05/07/2017
It was very proficient served on toast topped with a chopped hard boiled egg. The next night I mixed in some sour cream and a tin of mushroom soup and served information technology over noodles, like a quick hamburger stroganoff.
06/01/2017
Fabricated it just like your recipe. Came out perfect. 1 of the best things well-nigh the Army 50 years ago. Cheers a lot.
04/06/2010
It was fine, just nil special.
eleven/25/2012
My husband was a armed forces brat. His Dad would make this for breakfast. My husband said I "nailed it" when I fabricated this for dinner one dark. I used extra lean meat just the next fourth dimension I would use 80/20. It does add to the flavour.
01/15/2010
I loved mess hall food when I was a young Marine and look forward to this memory!!!
08/09/2010
Total condolement food...yummy. I didn't think it was going to be thick enough only as information technology sat information technology got too thick. So next fourth dimension I volition either serve it correct away or add some more than milk. Served over whole wheat toast.
11/05/2019
I think the recipe is awesome simply the fashion information technology is. I used a college fat percentage hamburger( cheaper in price) and it tasted great. Everyone who tried it absolutely LOVED it. Thank you John for sharing your tasty recipe!
09/02/2018
Tried this with footing pork, and it works bang-up! Nosotros similar ours a flake runnier to mix with rice and then next time I'll add an extra cup of milk.
03/27/2020
I did swap out the cubed bouillon for dried beefiness. My mom used to make this for our family.
11/08/2010
Great meal quick and piece of cake. I volition make this again
08/15/2015
Made information technology just as the recipe was written for a quick and filling dinner. It was the all-time SOS recipe I have ever institute. Whole family loved information technology. Will go along and make again.
02/22/2017
This was a little thick for us. I added a Worcestershire sauce. I would send information technology out a little more next time and maybe even used half pound of hamburger instead of a full.
03/09/2010
Practiced. My dad went crazy over it.
x/20/2019
Came out dandy, remind me of my military days LOL
07/04/2020
Loved information technology! Made information technology every bit directed and it was a hit with my boys who are picky eaters. Next fourth dimension I will add a chip more milk considering mine thickened very quickly to a paste, but I utilise very lean meat and never accept grease.
06/xiv/2010
I unremarkably make sausage gravy, just didn't take any sausage. Nonetheless, I had some leftover ground beefiness that I needed to utilise, then I tried this recipe. It was very simple to make and very good! I double the corporeality of flour and milk to make extra gravy and then that we could use information technology on some potatoes. I served the rest over biscuits. It thickened nicely.
01/12/2020
Very well put together recipe,. Yous should edit the office where information technology say anything other than HAMBURGER...and chicken bullion...If y'all ain't tried dried chipped beefiness "aka stale beef gravy". Human, you own't tried nothin. Hamburger doesn't add together the salt and color required for some good ol manner sos. Probably why the need for bullion cubes
01/25/2010
Followed the recipe exactly and this turned out wonderful! Quick, easy, delicious use of ground beef...it'due south a keeper for united states!
09/16/2015
This is a very simple repast that I savour. It really was easy to make and tastes neat!
03/26/2020
This is a pretty good recipe, merely I added fresh garlic instead of powdered and a sliced upward onion to the mix. Also used a can of beef broth instead of chicken bouillon cubes. Was amazing!
01/05/2020
This was soo delicious!! It totally reminded me of being a child! Will be making this once again!!
09/15/2019
My husband, who was an Air Force brat and whose mother fabricated SOS, liked it but institute information technology drier than it should be. Nosotros agreed that was considering I used 93% lean basis beefiness. I'm going to make it again but will use 85% lean ground beef!
07/20/2010
This was good for a quick, "what am I gonna brand with footing beef this night" meal.
10/13/2017
I followed the recipe to the letter of the alphabet. It got a piffling thicker that I thought it would so I added 1/2 cup more milk and it was more to our liking. I served it over butter flavored biscuits. I will make it again and maybe apply less flour or employ 2 cups of milk instead of 1½ cups like the recipe calls for. It's a keeper. My wife and I both liked information technology. Correct me if I'thou wrong, but I idea the original SOS was made with chipped beef.
02/15/2017
Grew up eating this besides! This is exactly how my dad fabricated information technology likewise. Yes I'm an Air Strength brat! This is the real deal on how it's fabricated. Good anytime of solar day!
08/08/2018
I served it over refrigerator biscuits. Delicious
04/11/2010
I thought this tasted great for such a simple recipe. And then quick and piece of cake that it'll be an "I don't experience like cooking" staple from now on. I ended upward adding much more milk, every bit the consistency was also thick for my sense of taste, just I likewise kept it on the heat longer than I needed to, waiting for my side dish to be fix. I might play with draining the fat (at to the lowest degree partially) and adding in broth instead, even though it says not to, just to meet how it turns out.
03/21/2020
This is how my dad used to make it when I was a kid. He was a veteran of Vietnam. When I was in, SOS was just the same in the DFAC. Now I'm making it. Great recipe.
08/04/2020
Love this recipe version! Added diced bong pepper, Vidalia sweet onion, Serrano pepper, and Tony's, plus 1/four cup milk more. And then yummy!
12/12/2018
This dish fills me with nostalgia. Thank you for the help on flour/milk proportions.
12/30/2019
Very skillful loved information technology.
xi/05/2020
This recipe is perfect, but like the Navy cooks in the galley fabricated it during my career. I like to ratchet up the heat, and then I'll put a 1/4 tsp of ground cayenne in mine, or like chili flakes. Habanero chili pulverisation, if you are serious almost information technology. I make a big batch and so freeze it in portions and vacuum pack it for hiking trips. Makes a fast, nutritious poly peptide that can be eaten cold or hot on the fly and keeps well.
06/23/2010
This is Outstanding! I liked the creamed beef in the Marines only I tin can tell you information technology wasn't at all like this. My son who is picky, asks me to make it quite often. I usually put information technology over hash browns but information technology is then expert I would swallow off the bottom of the trash tin. Thank you for sharing this recipe
03/28/2018
Thank you John for the recipe. Fabricated me smile when I saw and tried your recipe. My Dad would mention this . Unproblematic and good. Side by side time, I would add 1/2 cup of minced onion and some worchestershire sauce. Taffy
10/31/2017
had no milk and so I used cream of chicken soup and one/2 a can of water. I didn't want to sparse it out too much so added sour cream ( i/ii cup) then so good
04/28/2020
My family loved information technology and information technology's simple to make, and very filling we volition be making information technology again.
09/13/2016
Turned out really well....
01/27/2020
I detected a niggling scrap too much garlic in the recipe so the next fourth dimension nosotros brand it will reduce the corporeality of garlic powder that we apply.
07/04/2010
I love it! My hubby (who is a very picky eater) loves it as well!
12/16/2015
Not bad for last infinitesimal and niggling ingredients. Very filling...everyone went back for seconds...no leftovers. Next time I'yard adding Jimmy Dean sausage.
07/18/2020
Takes me back to my fourth dimension in the military. Required more than milk to keep it loose/shine. Will brand again for certain.
05/21/2020
Came out very good. Brought dorsum memories of when my gramps used to make it. I had his recipe but lost it quite a few years ago. This is spot on, only modify I fabricated from what I remember of his was to add butter to the roux, I recall I used most 2 TBS, but may non take been necessary. Too, I served over a fried egg over toast
10/16/2018
Great i grew up having this as a child I was so glad to notice the recipe very succulent
07/15/2018
I cooked my footing beef with diced fresh onion instead of onion salt and minced garlic instead of garlic powder. I also used toasted sourdough bread instead of regular white bread. I will definitely be cooking this again!
09/13/2017
I made this and instead of onion table salt I used three small greenish onions, chopped. I as well used flavour salt in place of regular salt. Came out not bad and really like shooting fish in a barrel to whip up.
03/20/2016
I was in the Military for 22 years, and I always looked forward to having this for breakfast. I've searched for the perfect recipe. And u just found it here. This is exactly how I remember information technology. I didn't have it with toast, instead I had it with a poached egg on a English language muffin with some Canadian bacon. I guess it'due south eggs Benedict with the SOS instead Hollandaise. Still you accept information technology, you will love it. I didn't modify the recipe at all.
04/05/2020
I did 2 cups of milk instead of 1 1/ii, nosotros loved it! I served it over biscuits. Definitely going to make this one again!
09/07/2021
I have made this recipe and so many times. I've done it exactly how it'south written, And I've also tweeked it a bit. I melt some bell pepper and onion with garlic offset, set that aside.. and so cook this yummy stuff.. and add the veggies Subsequently the meat has cooked. my daughter e'er asks for this!!
04/xi/2022
My mom always fabricated this when I was immature and I could never match it. This was the closest ever. Thank you lot
01/25/2022
I thought spice wise it was peachy. Yet when I doubled the recipe, I felt that doubling the flour was too much, made it style to thick even with more milk. I would keep the flour the same and add a tad more milk!
09/08/2018
My family unit loved this meal. Only alter I fabricated was to add a petty worcestershire sauce after reading some of the other reviews. We will definitely be making this again. Cheers for posting!
